Baby Bimmer will stimulate your senses

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

What BMW's new sub-3-Series-sized models may lack in physical stature they more than make up for in their ability to stimulate all the senses. ...Read the full article

  1. Aloha Eric from Toronto, Canada writes: The $41,700 canadian base price is $6800 or 19.5% more than the US base price of $34,900. The Canadian car likely has the cold weather package already included in the base price, but this is only a $600 option on the US car. Destination charges are $775 in the US but look to pay $1,895 in Canada.

This would be a slam dunk to buy in the US as opposed to Canada if it weren't for the ridiculous barriers to importation that BMW has crafted. These barriers have resulted in a class action lawsuit.

  2. GM Blogger from Canada writes: People. Just don't give in to the rip off. DOn't but these piles of elegant fuel inefficient crap.
  3. George Push from Canada writes: Very cool design and engineering go into BMW cars, but there is still no need for any passenger car, of any size, to have an engine larger than about 2.5 litres. There are many larger cars with that displacement that manage to haul around passengers very handily, thank you very much.
  4. Dead Parrot Sketch from Canada writes: yep sure stimulates my senses! my sense of outrage at the ridiculous CDN prices on german cars in this country

  5. Alex D from Ottawa, Canada writes: Tried out the hatchback in France last summer. The configuration has a decent amount of flexibility - 5 door - for actually carrying stuff around. A real beauty too and the 4 cylinder gas engine was really fun. But of course the ridiculous success of the Mazda 3 clone in Canada isn't worth taking into account. Ahem.

No doubt this coupe and engine configuration will make a nice show piece. Beats a bad toupee anyway. Again, we just don't seem to get much choice in higher end urban vehicles and certainly not with engine configurations.
  6. Bert Russell Paradox, BC from Canada writes:

Sense is not what its all about, if you like your car unreliable, flashy with all the bells and whistles - if image is what it is all you want or are buying, then do. Otherwise Lada probably has the same reliability and better gas mileage.
  7. warren shiau from toronto, Canada writes: I get the idea they are going to corner the market on urban wanna-be hipsters who would otherwise purchase VWs or Minis.

If BMW really wants to go back to its roots, it should do a "club sport" type stripped-down version (but less expensive instead of more expensive). If they could do that for under $30K they'd have enthusiasts / club racing types back with them in substantial numbers - which would do wonders for their "performance" image.
  8. Rumon Faskater from United States Outlying writes: Oh boy, more fake yuppies on the road who can't afford the real thing.
  9. Alex D from Ottawa, Canada writes: Warren, I don't think they're going to corner any hipster markets blowing through the 40K price mark. This configuration is Viagra.

I totally agree with you on the club car, but I don't see it happening. Have you ever seen the affordable stripped down Audi A3 popular with young urbanites in Europe and the UK? Me neither.
  10. Roberto Segado from Canada writes: I would consider paying the US price but I refuse to pay an inflated price in Canada. I hope enough fellow drivers are patient enough to refrain from buying (or buy in the US) to force Canadian prices down.
  11. warren shiau from toronto, Canada writes: Yikes, I thought they were going to come in with a base of $33K.

I think our problem is that we're a low volume market, so Audi, BMW, etc. stick us with low volume, high sticker.

I read even Ford is going to go for a "premium" sticker price with the new Festiva. "It's not an economy car, it's a fashion statement" or some sort of thinking along those lines.
  12. M D from Canada writes: Too bad the hatchback 5 door 123i won't make it here. Twin-turbo diesel engine with great power and very efficient. The best cars stay in Europe, they send the dumbed-down over-powered versions to NA.
